A Degumming Machine removes sericin, the natural gum on raw silk, from silk yarn or fabric. Once the gum is gone, the silk turns soft, shiny and ready to take dye evenly.
The silk is placed on hank carriers or spindles inside a tank, and a hot liquor with soap, soda ash or enzyme is circulated through it. This loosens the gum and washes it away without harming the fibre.

Degumming is done at a gentle temperature, up to about 98°C. This removes the gum fully and protects the strength and shine of the silk.
